The Teaching Journey of Progressive Educators

Poet William Butler Yeats once said: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” In education, that miracle lies not only in teaching methods, but in the heart and dedication of the teacher. Those who light the flame do so to awaken passion and help students believe in themselves.

We invite you to join us in a conversation with two exceptional educators from WASS – Mr. Dao Nguyen Manh Linh and Mr. Matthew Peresin, recipients of the Golden Apple Award 2025 – as they share their inspiring teaching journeys and the enduring educational values they continue to uphold.

What was your first reaction upon hearing that you had received the Golden Apple Award?

Mr. Dao Nguyen Manh Linh: I felt deeply honored and truly happy upon learning that I had been selected for the Golden Apple Award. In that memorable moment, I was also filled with gratitude for the support and guidance from my colleagues and the leadership team at our School.

Mr. Matthew Peresin: When I heard my name announced as this year’s Golden Apple Award recipient, I was so happy! It was such an exciting and meaningful moment for me. I feel incredibly grateful to my fellow teachers for selecting me. Knowing that this recognition came from my peers makes it even more special.

During your time with the WASS community, were there any moments that made you realize why you chose to become a teacher? What made that moment so meaningful to you?

Mr. Dao Nguyen Manh Linh: During my time at WASS, I’ve had many unforgettable moments with both my students and the broader WASS family. But one moment that truly affirmed my calling as an educator was when the English division’s thematic seminar series for the academic year 2024 – 2025 concluded successfully. It was the culmination of countless days of relentless effort by all the teachers in our department, as well as the dedicated staff and colleagues at our 84 Ba Huyen Thanh Quan Campus.

Mr. Matthew Peresin: There have been several moments at WASS that reminded me exactly why I chose to become a teacher. One that really stands out was during a math activity where my students were building 3D shape models using clay and toothpicks. They were so engaged! Asking questions, making connections, and genuinely excited about what they were doing.

At one point, I tried to offer some hints to help, but they confidently replied, “No, we can do it!” That moment really stuck with me. It’s the best feeling as a teacher, seeing your students take ownership of their learning and thrive independently. It reminded me that our role isn’t just to teach content, but to guide, encourage, and help students believe in themselves.

Teaching is a long journey that requires patience and empathy. On the days when you feel truly exhausted or doubtful of yourself, what helps you overcome those challenges?

Mr. Dao Nguyen Manh Linh: There are certainly moments in my work when I face difficulties and begin to question myself and my efforts. However, whenever I see the bright smiles of my students, hear their stories, feel their trust, and witness their growth day by day, I’m reminded that these challenges are worth facing and that I can overcome them.

Mr. Matthew Peresin: Whenever I have really tiring days or moments of self-doubt, I remind myself that there’s always tomorrow, another chance to grow, improve, and try again. That mindset really helps me keep things in perspective.

I’m also fortunate to have such supportive co-workers I can rely on. Just having someone to talk to, share ideas with, or even just laugh with can make all the difference. And of course, my students always lift my spirits. Whether it’s a bright smile, a cheerful “Hello, teacher!” or simply seeing their excitement to learn, it reminds me exactly why I love what I do.

In an ever-evolving educational environment, what is one value you’ve never let go of and why?

Mr. Dao Nguyen Manh Linh: For me, as an educator, the most essential value has always been creativity. In a constantly changing educational landscape, a teacher’s ability to stay creative is more important than ever. Pursuing creativity in my teaching not only makes the work more effective, but it’s also the very reason I remain committed to this value throughout my journey.

Mr. Matthew Peresin: One core value I’ve never let go of is patience. In a constantly evolving education environment, where expectations and approaches are always changing, patience has remained one of the most important parts of my teaching philosophy. I’ve learned that every student is different. They grow, learn, and understand things at their own pace. Being patient means giving them the time and space they need to make mistakes, ask questions, and build confidence. It means celebrating progress, no matter how big or small, and never rushing the process.

Patience also helps me stay grounded, especially during challenging days. It reminds me that real learning takes time and that the most meaningful growth often happens gradually. Holding onto that value has helped me create a classroom environment where students feel supported and not pressured.

Some environments help us do our jobs well, while others help us become better versions of ourselves every day. What does RT Holdings mean to you?

Mr. Dao Nguyen Manh Linh: To me, RT Holdings is an environment that has allowed me to grow, learn, and become better every single day. It’s an open and encouraging space where innovation is welcomed. I’ve also had the privilege of working alongside experienced and dedicated colleagues, who have inspired me and supported my development throughout this journey.

Mr. Matthew Peresin: For me, RT Holdings is the kind of place that helps you grow both professionally and personally. It’s not just about doing your job well. It’s about becoming a better version of yourself every day. One thing that really impresses me is the positive communication the organization maintains with parents. It creates a strong sense of trust and partnership, which makes such a big difference in the classroom.

I also really appreciate how teachers are given the tools and support they need to keep improving. Whether it’s through training, resources, or just being encouraged to try new things, I always feel like I’m growing here. RT Holdings is a place where you feel supported, challenged, and inspired. That’s exactly the kind of environment where great teaching happens.
