Passion for Education Begins with Love and Grows with Curiosity
At RT Holdings, teachers are not only knowledge sharers but also steadfast companions who nurture students’ dreams every day. Amidst the ever-shifting tides of our times, these educators carry a mission of enlightenment, rooted in dedication, fueled by passion, and anchored in an unwavering belief in the future of education.
In recognition of these tireless efforts, the Golden Apple Award was established as a tribute to educators who have made outstanding contributions throughout their teaching journey. This year, PennSchool takes immense pride in celebrating two of its own, Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem Huong and Mr. Jacob Fleming, recipients of the 2025 Golden Apple Award. Let’s join RT Connection as we sit down with them to hear their heartfelt stories and reflections!
How did you feel when your name was announced as this year’s Golden Apple award recipient?
Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem Huong: Being named among this year’s Golden Apple recipients was truly an emotional and heartfelt moment for me. More than just a recognition for my efforts throughout the academic year, it marked a meaningful milestone, made even more special by the fact that I’ve had the privilege to walk this journey alongside the PennSchool community. Their unwavering support and daily inspiration have been invaluable. This award is a powerful reminder for me to keep dedicating myself to education, to continue innovating, and to spread love and compassion in every step of this teaching journey.
Mr. Jacob Fleming: I was stunned at first! I was up against some very talented teachers, so I did not expect to win, but I’m very grateful and thankful to all who voted for me.
If you could revisit one moment in your teaching career that made you feel the proudest, what would it be?
Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem Huong: If I could revisit the moment I’m most proud of, it would undoubtedly be the day I witnessed my students graduate – hearing their names called to receive prestigious American high school diplomas, accompanied by scholarships worth tens of billions of VND from renowned universities both in Vietnam and abroad. It was not only a well-deserved reward for their tireless effort and determination, but also a sweet reward for a long journey filled with dedication, perseverance, and wholehearted commitment from the entire PennSchool team.
Mr. Jacob Fleming: I would say it’s when the feedback you give a student is actively listened to, and they work hard to make the necessary improvements to achieve their goals. Seeing their eyes light up after achieving their goals is something that makes me very proud. I believe that teachers and students must always be inquisitive and curious. Without asking questions and challenging our perspectives, we cannot possibly hope to gain new knowledge.
In a constantly evolving education environment, what is one core value you’ve never let go of, and why has it remained so important to you?
Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem Huong: Amidst countless changes in the educational landscape, from teaching methods and technology to how we engage with students, the value I have never let go of is the love and respect I hold for each of my students. I firmly believe that when students feel genuinely cared for, understood, and recognized, they become truly open to learning and growth. That love has always been the most sincere bridge between me and my students, no matter how much the world around us changes.
Mr. Jacob Fleming: I believe that teachers and students must always be inquisitive and curious. Without asking questions and challenging our perspectives, we cannot possibly hope to gain new knowledge.
If there were a Golden Apple Award for students, who would you give it to and why?
Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem Huong: If I could present the Golden Apple Award to a student, I would give it to Vu Truc Anh (Annie). She is a shining example of resilience—someone who has overcome personal hardship to unlock her potential and discover her self-worth. Not only is Annie an outstanding student academically, but she is also an active participant in school activities and, above all, a compassionate soul.
Knowing that her mother is battling multiple illnesses, Annie is even more determined to pursue a career in nursing in the United States, with the dream of not only taking better care of her mother but also giving back to the community. Despite juggling her studies and responsibilities at home, she maintained a 4.0 GPA in Grade 12 and received admission offers from 16 prestigious universities in the U.S., with total scholarships estimated at around 55 billion VND. To me, Annie embodies courage, compassion, and a deeply meaningful sense of purpose.
Mr. Jacob Fleming: It’s probably Henry. He is the definition of a model student. He actively takes part in lessons, he is kind and respectful towards all his peers, and he has a real passion for learning.
After your time working at PennSchool, is there something about yourself that you’ve realized has changed – something you never expected would?
Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem Huong: What surprised me most about myself during my time at PennSchool is how much I’ve changed in the way I listen to and understand my students. In the past, I often focused on giving guidance and direction. But at PennSchool – where personalized learning and a liberating approach to education are deeply valued -, I’ve learned to pause and listen, then try to step into my students’ world. From there, I’ve been able to connect with them through genuine empathy. That shift has made my teaching journey more meaningful and inspiring every single day.
Mr. Jacob Fleming: I wouldn’t say change, but I have become more confident in my overall teaching ability. I have developed my ability to adapt to the needs of different classes, and it’s been a pleasure to watch them develop their individual personalities as well as their academic capabilities.
